For independents paying Booking.com for their own name.
An independent property in Dahab, Siwa or Luxor competes with a platform that has a budget for bidding on your brand name and a commission rate you agreed to when you had no other channel.
An independent hotel or camp reduces OTA dependence by defending its own brand name in search, showing rate parity with a clear direct-booking advantage, making the booking engine as fast as the platform's, and using guest data for repeat stays that the OTA booking never allows.
Sound familiar
What we hear in the first call
- !A guest who already chose you searches your property name and books through a platform ad sitting above your own listing.
- !Your direct booking engine is slower and uglier than the OTA's, so even loyal guests use the platform.
- !You have hundreds of past guests and no way to reach any of them.
- !Your property photography and description on the platform are better than the ones on your own site.
Your guest already chose you. Then paid a platform 18% to find your front door.

Questions
Before you ask.
Doesn't rate parity stop us offering a better direct price?
It usually restricts price, not value. Free late checkout, a transfer, an upgrade or breakfast included are all levers that stay within most parity agreements. We work within them rather than pretending they don't exist.
Is it worth bidding on our own property name?
If a platform is bidding on it, usually yes. It feels like paying for free traffic, until you compare the click cost with the commission on the same booking.
We're a small camp with twelve rooms. Is this relevant?
The brand-defence and booking-speed parts are relevant at any size and cost little. A full programme may not be, and we'll say so.
Should we leave the platforms?
No. They fill low season and reach people who've never heard of you. The aim is that guests who already know you don't arrive through them.
